Why it’s time to use hedge fund marketing to its full potential

The mysteriousness that once surrounded the hedge fund sector is slowly disappearing. The industry evolved over the years, and of recent hedge funds have appreciated the need to become much more marketing savvy.

More and more hedge fund managers are responding to these demands by developing a web presence and using the most trusted and effective hedge fund marketing techniques to promote their services to potential investors.

Clients and investors are now using Google to help find the right hedge fund, but surprisingly few hedge fund managers have fully tapped into the benefits that this search engine can bring.

Potential is being left unfulfilled

In a recent study, it was found that, while 73% of hedge funds have a website address, only 42% of them house a website that contains more than a contact form. This just goes to show that many hedge fund managers are still finding it difficult to overcome the secrecy of the past to provide visitors with all of the information they need to make the best decisions.

There’s no doubt that effective marketing can help hedge funds to stand out from the crowd, but it was found that the majority of hedge funds (60%) only use LinkedIn as their main way of communicating. Even then, almost half of these pages do not serve the required purpose because they have no true owned authorship. They are simply auto-created by LinkedIn itself and have no distinctive voice or content strategy.

When you consider that just 22% of all hedge funds covered in this study had a professional, fully-functioning website and a LinkedIn page optimised for search, it shouldn’t take you long to realise that numerous potential methods of communication are being missed.

Poor marketing efforts make it harder to be found

If you want potential clients to find you on the major search engines, everything that you put on your website and social media channels needs to be optimised and include appropriate keywords. If you fail to do this, your business will simply get lost in the crowd.

Given that the sector has been secretive for so long, it’s perhaps understandable that many managers are finding it difficult to get their hedge fund marketing right.
